Global mobility has long been a driving force in connecting people, cultures, and businesses worldwide, fostering progress and freedom. However, this connectivity has also led to significant challenges, particularly in the form of carbon emissions. The aviation sector alone contributes 2-3% of global carbon emissions, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

In response to this pressing issue, Sasol and Topsoe announced in June 2023 a joint venture aimed at advancing the production of sustainable aviation fuels. The partnership is leveraging a unique combination of technologies, capabilities, and deep industry experience to ‘go beyond’ in scaling the production of these fuels.

The Sasol Topsoe joint venture focuses on developing, building, owning, and operating sustainable aviation fuel plants. The recently appointed head of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels joint venture, Jana Toschka, says the fuels produced will be derived primarily from non-fossil feedstock, utilizing green hydrogen, sustainable sources of CO2, and/or biomass.

“Sustainable feed stocks could be from plant or animal materials, or could also be CO2 captured from the air and combined with water and renewable electricity in very specialised processes, turned into liquid fuels that contain the same components as aviation fuels,” he says.

The Sasol Topsoe joint venture represents a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to decarbonize air transport. By leveraging their combined expertise and resources, Sasol and Topsoe are poised to make a meaningful impact on global carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future for air travel.
